Food glorious food!

This post is for Kate who has been very disappointed by my culinary experiences so far! After a fortnight of Cuban rations, I was very pleased to have a city full of fantastic restaurants to visit and San Franciscan delicacies to taste.

Day one, it had to be proper American fare and Jane, Marcella and I headed to a diner. Yep, hamburger with sweet potato fries. In true USA stylee it was super sized and I did not manage it all; but I it was a sterling effort.

A wander down to Fisherman’s Wharf. Once I had been suitably shocked by the ‘bush man’ (a chap who hides behind a bush he brings with him and jumps out on unsuspecting tourists), I had to try the clam chowder.

The chowder is best served and savoured in a huge bread bun and with oyster crackers; oh and an obligatory glass of white vino.

So this was so tasty I had to go again!
Conveniently there was a fab Thai across the road from my hostel. The logo may look familiar.

Night one duck noodles, night two I tried the fried rice with crispy belly pork, well it was Sunday!

Picking up on my coffee and cake habit I acquired with Ashley in South America, I frequented a couple of cafes. I tried a couple Italians in Long Beach, proper coffee.

Also tried Banana bread in the Mission district.

No trip to USA would not be complete without a corn dog, deep fried hot dog to me and you! Actually, it tasted mighty fine.

I was told that the ‘Stinking Rose’ is a San Franciscan institution, an Italian famed for its garlic!

The fontina and spinach fondue, with garlic (obviously), was mighty fine and my meal was topped off with clams in garlic, mmmmm x

I heart San Francisco – part two

Take two, here we have the cool Haight (Camden esq’; where the hippy movement began), Castro (the pink end of toon), The Misson (where it’s all going on apparently!), Alacatraz, the fan bloody tastic (sorry for the language, but this place rocks – pier 45 btw) Musee Mechanqiue where I spent the best $5 of my life- in quarters, on fortune tellers (they were plastic) dancing folks, silent movies, pin ball machines and I must admit I’ve picked up a change your penny fetish and oh, of course, I could not have came to SF and not indulged in a vino tour. Hey, anyone hiring over here? X

I heart San Francisco – part one

It’s my last night here and I am so very sad to be leaving. I was not supposed to be here for as long, but I had to keep extending my trip; this place has stolen my heart!

I could quite easily write 10 posts about this fab city, but I’ll try to keep it manageable; a gal has vino to drink. I have been selective with my pix, but it looks like at least two posts worth. I don’t think a life time here would be enough to capture the charm of SF, but here goes…

Rather than goo-ing about everywhere I’ve been, I’ll be concise (yeh, for a change), so here you have; Union Square, China Town, Coit Towers and the superb views, the Golden Gates bridge (painted in International Red), Lombard Street (the curviest and steepest street; can’t imagine a hill start in the snow would be fun), the seals down on Pier 39, Japan Town, Filmore Street and Postcard Row… How’s this for starters? X
